Day 1a Completed; Casper Toft Leads the Way

Livello 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Phil Hellmuth & Spider-Man
Phil Hellmuth & Spider-Man

Day 1a of the World Poker Tour Malta main event has been completed and what a day it was. The field size may have been slightly smaller than anticipated but there were plenty of big names among the 64 entries. By the time tournament director Chritin Scalzsi called time on proceedings there were only 34 players remaining in the field, these 34 topped by Denmark's Casper Toft and his 123,600 chips.

It has been almost exactly 12 months since Toft has a live score recorded on his Hendon Mob page, the last entry was on September 14, 2011 when he finished 30th in a €1,500 buy-in event at the Partouche Poker Tour for a score of €3,500. Since that date there have been no further entries but if he keeps up his current form that will all end here in Malta this week.

Toft added the chips of Vladimir Geshkenbein to his own stack towards the end of play when his pocket eights held against Geshkenbein's {10-}{9-} and those extra chips were enough to propel Toft to the top of the chip counts when play did end.

Other players who had great days at the felt include a regular on the WPT and a player who finished third in the WPT Venice Grand Prix, Andrea Dato (106,300), Dato's fellow countryman Alfonso Amendola (106,000), [Removed:39] (103,700) and the sixth place finisher at the recent WPT Merit Cyprus Classic, Kiryl Radzivonau (94,800).

Day 1a also the likes of Dominik Nitsche (91,400), Australias's Jeffrey Rossiter (82,400), the legendary Phil Hellmuth (47,000) and Jonathan Duhamel (40,900) all make it through to Tuesday's Day 2. Hellmuth was stalked, for want of a better word, by Spider-Man during play today and we have it on good authority the same costume-wearing person will be sporting a new outfit tomorrow for when Tony G makes an appearance!

Along with the aforementioned Geshkenbein, the following big names failed to make it through the day with their chip stacks intact. The hyper-aggressive Cecilia Pescaglini, Erik Cajelais, Sean Jazayeri, Roger Hairabedian (who was eliminated twice) and Marvin Rettenmaier (also eliminated twice).

Monday's Day 1b should see a bumper crowd descend on the Casino at Portomaso including the likes of Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst and a whole host of other familiar faces.

Spider-Man Spider-Man, Does Whatever A Spider Can!

Phil Hellmuth & Spider-Man
Phil Hellmuth & Spider-Man

No we haven't lost the plot here in Malta, Spider-Man has just paid us a visit in the tournament area!

He sat behind Phil Hellmuth for over five minutes and Spider-Man event called the clock on the 12-time WSOP bracelet winner!

We asked Spider-Man if he called the clock on Hellmuth and he simply said, "No comment. But I would like to say Hellmuth won his first bracelet with {9-}{9-} so what the hell was he doing slowrolling with pocket nines this time?"

Hellmuth folded what he claimed was pocket nines, but how did Spider-Man know? Was his Spider-Sense tingling?

Pescaglini Heads To The Sidelines

Cecilia Pescaglini
Cecilia Pescaglini

Cecilia Pescaglini has been eliminated at the hands of Alfonso Amendola. The chips went flying in on the {4-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts} flop, Pescaglini holding the best hand with her {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs} . However, it only stayed the best hand until the river because the {j-Hearts} fell on the turn then the {A-Hearts} on the river to improve Amendola's {A-Spades}{K-Hearts} to the best hand and the volatile Pescaglini has been eliminated.

Jeffrey Rossiter Climbs To The Top Of The Chip Counts

Jeffrey Rossiter
Jeffrey Rossiter

Jeffrey Rossiter has just eliminated Jerome Brion and now finds himself at the top of the chip counts. There was a raise to 600 from first position, Rossiter called from the cutoff, Brion three-bet to 2,400, the original raiser folded and Rossiter four-bet to 5,325. Brion got the rest of his stack into the middle and Rossiter snap-called.

Rossiter turned over {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} and was nicely in front of the {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds} of Brion. The board ran out {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Spades}{5-Spades}{q-Clubs} and with that Brion busted and Rossiter flew up the chip counts

Radzivonau Costs Kaddoura

Livello 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Kiryl Radzivonau
Kiryl Radzivonau

Kiyril Radzivonau has just cost the Revive Touch massage girl Lena Kaddoura some business by eliminating Jorryt van Hoof.

Radzivonau opened to 625 from under the gun and the action folded all the way round to van Hoof on the button. He called, as did Emma Suomalainen in the big blind.

The three players saw the dealer fan out the {8-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} flop, a flop that was checked to van Hoof on the button. He paused for a couple of seconds before betting 1,300 and only Radzivonau called.

Radzivonau then lead out on a {k-Spades} turn and van Hoof called again, tossing in a 5,000 chip to make it. The {5-Diamonds} on the river was greeted with an all-in bet from Radzivonau, which was an effective bet of around 16,000 because that is all van Hoof had in his stack. As he was contemplating making a call, van Hoof saw the massage girl heading towards him and he said,

"I might be out, if not I would like a massage!"

But that massage will never happen as he made the call, then mucked, when his opponent showed him {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for the straight.

Radzinovau is now up to 86,000

Marvin Rettenmaier Eliminated

PartyPoker sponsored pro Marvin Rettenmaier has been eliminated but we will be seeing him again tomorrow as he has just informed us that he will be re-entering on Day 1b.

All of Rettenmaier's stack went into the middle on a {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}, Rettenmaier holding {A-Hearts}{k-Clubs} and Cesare Florio holding a dominated {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. Florio may have been well behind but that all changed when the {q-Clubs} appeared on the turn. The {J-Spades} river was no help to Rettenmaier and he was eliminated from WPT Malta.

Welcome To The World Poker Tour Malta Main Event!

Matt Gianetti; Season X WPT Malta Champion
Matt Gianetti; Season X WPT Malta Champion

Just hours ago Matt Salsberg took down the World Poker Tour Grand Prix de Paris Main Event, netting himself €400,000 in the process. Now the long-running tour packs its bags and heads to sunny Malta where for the next week it will call the Casino at Portomaso home.

Last year's WPT Malta Main Event was the first-ever European-based WPT tournament to be played to a re-entry format and that trend continues through to this year. Day 1a kicks off at 13:00 CET and if you want to participate all you need to do is visit the cashier's cage and hand over €3,300 before the end of the sixth one-hour level. Should you or any of your opponents bust out before play comes to an end on Day 1a, you and they can re-enter on Monday's Day 1b for an additional €3,300 and have another bite at the cherry.

We are till waiting for confirmation of the schedule today but in the corresponding tournament last year, seven 60-minute levels were played and a dinner break was also taken. As soon as we have official word from the tournament director then we will let you and everybody else know the plan of action for the starting flights.

Last year it was Matt Giannetti (pictured) who flew back to his native USA with the Champions Cup and $273,200 after he bested a star-studded field of 240 runners to become the WPT Malta champion. Among those players who Giannetti had to navigate past on his way to victory included Marvin Rettenmaier, Tobias Reinkemeier, Steve O'Dwyer, James Akenhead, Fabrice Soulier, and the legendary Phil Hellmuth. Hopefully many of the same big names will be in attendance this week.

Lock your browsers to the PokerNews Live Reporting pages because we will be bringing you all of the action, as it happens, from the WPT Malta Main Event. Until then we are going to catch some rays!
