The Prize at the end of the Tunnel - a coveted WSOP cold bracelet!

Day 1 of Event #38: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em has officially ended after ten long levels of hard-played poker. Play began at 12 p.m. PDT with 2,192 hopefuls looking to claim WSOP glory and the $540,136 first-place prize that goes along with it. However, only 320 players survived to see Day 2, including defending WSOP Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel (13,500), Melanie Weisner (55,600), Bernard Lee (19,200), Sam Trickett (45,300) and Justin "Boosted J" Smith (32,300) Our big stacks heading to Day 2 include our current chip leader Jon Spinks (133,600), Gabriel Aleria (122,800) and David Rounick (121,200).

Notables unfortunate to bust early include David Williams, Randy "Nanonoko" Lew, Faraz Jaka, Liv Boeree, Matt Affleck, Dennis Phillips, Tom "Durrrr" Dwan, Jon "PearlJammer" Turner, Men Nguyen, Betrand "Elky" Grospellier and Antonio Esfandiari.

Play is scheduled to resume at 2:30 p.m. PDT tomorrow, where our remaining players will duke it out to survive - and thrive - as the bubble approaches. Of the remaining players, only 216 will make the money, with $3,018 being the min-cash. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews as we bring you all of the action as we make the race to the final table.

Melanie Weisner Whacked

Livello 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

After a player raised to 2,000 from under-the-gun, Melanie Weisner made the call and then watched as the small blind moved all-in for 12,200. The original raiser folded but Weisner decided to put the small blind at risk and she came along.

Showdown:

Weisner: {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Opponent: {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}

Weisner had woken up with a big ace, but her opponent held a better kicker and had Weisner in bad shape. The final board rolled out {8-Spades}{J-Spades}{Q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{K-Spades} and Weisner's Broadway straight was second-best to her opponent's spade flush. She dropped to 38,000 with the loss but still holds a healthy stack as Day 1 winds down.

Duhamel Drops One, Then Doubles Through

Jonathan Duhamel was involved in big hand holding {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}, which dominated the {A-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} held by his opponent. When the flop came {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}, however, the defending Main Event champion was on the wrong end of a bad beat. The {A-Hearts} on the turn and {10-Diamonds} on the river left Duhamel with an inferior two-pair and he dropped to just 5,500 chips in a crippling loss.

Shortly afterward we caught Duhamel shove his short-stack before the flop with {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}. He was called by one player, who showed down {K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}, and Duhamel's hand held up on a final board of {2-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{3-Spades}{2-Spades}. He now has 11,500 chips, and while that is still a bit short at this stage of Day 1, we can never count out the man who claimed poker's premiere prize just one year ago.

Watterworth Slips

Livello 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

We caught up just as Jeff Watterworth raised enough to put his short-stacked opponent all-in. His opponent made the call.

Watterworth: {8-}{8-}
Opponent: {A-}{K-}

The board ran out {6-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}, to which Watterworth said, "Overkill!"

Watterworth is still healthy with 44,000 in chips.

Fohrenbach Finishes One Off With Fours

After an opponent raised all-in for his last 3,700, Ricky Fohrenbach made the call and flipped up {4s]{4-Hearts}. The other player held {A-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and the two were racing for the pot.

The final board rolled out {3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{3-Spades} and Fohrenbach crossed the finish line first, winning with his pair of fours. The win boosted his stack to around 26,000 as level nine came to a close.

Weisner Takes a Hit

Melanie Weisner opened for 1,300 from the cutoff and her opponent on the button min-raised to 2,600. The blinds folded and Weisner called.

The flop came {3-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and Weisner check-called a 1,300 bet from her opponent. She check-called another 1,300 bet when the {4-Spades} fell on the turn. However, when the {9-Clubs} river, both players checked.

"Gotta pair?" Weisner asked. Her opponent flipped over {J-}{J-}.

"That's good," Weisner quipped while mucking her cards.

Weisner is down to 30,000.
