Day 2 Concludes

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Justin Filtz
Justin Filtz

The short-handed game usually guarantees action. And we certainly saw plenty of that during Day 2 of the $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Six-Handed Event No. 40. A total of 172 returned for today's second day of play, and by the time ten levels were complete just 20 of those players remained. Justin Filtz ended the day with the most chips by far, bagging 2.017 million, nearly twice that of his nearest challenger.

Those hitting the rail shy of the cash today included Jeff Shulman, Freddy Deeb, Vanessa Rousso, Matt Hawrilenko, Tony Dunst, Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott, and Jim McManus. When the dinner break arrived just 79 remained, and on the first hand back Antony Ruberto was eliminated, meaning they'd reached the money.

Among the min-cashers were Jason Dewitt, Nenad Medic, Tuan Le, Joe Serock, Daniel Alaei, Angel Guillen, and Shaun Deeb. Meanwhile Justin Filtz began to surge up toward the top of the chip counts, remaining ahead of the pack for much of the evening.

As we lost the likes of Olivier Busquet, Eugene Todd, and Isaac Haxton, 2010 November Niner Matt Jarvis scored a huge pot against Grayson Ramage, making two pair with {7-Spades}{6-Spades} to crack Ramage's pocket aces and momentarily challenge Filtz for the chip lead.

But Filtz would push even further ahead, increasing his lead as we moved through the last couple of levels. Phil Hellmuth nursed his short stack long enough to finish in 36th. Fifteen more players would follow him to the rail before the night was done, including Nick Maimone, David Singer, Faraz Jaka, Haralabos Voulgaris, and John Andress. Meanwhile Massimiliano Martinez scored a couple of knockouts to cross the million-chip mark and into second place, though remains well behind Filtz.

Others returning tomorrow to above-average stacks include Matt Jarvis, Kevin Iacofano, and Jude Ainsworth. Jonathan Duhamel, Daniel Negreanu, and Shane Schleger will be coming back as well, albeit to shorter stacks. (See the full Day 3 table draw below.)

The action resumes tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Vegas time. Come back then to follow it all here at PokerNews.

Andress Out

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
John Andress
John Andress

John Andress was just all in for his tourney life with {A-Hearts}{10-Spades} and up against Massimiliano Martinez who held {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}. The board came {J-Spades}{5-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{4-Spades}, and Andress was eliminated in 21st place. Martinez now has 980,000.

We've just heard the call that the tourney clock has been stopped and just four more hands will be played tonight.

Champ's Kings Cracked

Jonathan Duhamel
Jonathan Duhamel

After just winning a big pot off of Randy Dorfman, Jonathan Duhamel has dropped back down to around 300,000 chips.

Robert Merulla raised in the cutoff, Johnathan Duhamel re-raised on the button, and Merulla moved all in for 218,000. Duhamel called.

Merulla: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Duhamel: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Duhamel's kings were cracked as the board ran {9-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}, doubling Merulla to over 400,000 chips.

Dorfman Shown the Door

Randy Dorfman
Randy Dorfman

Randy Dorfman moved all in over a raise from Jonathan Duhamel, and the 2010 Main Event Champion quickly made the call.

Dorfman: {a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Duhamel: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}

The flop fell {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Hearts}, and Duhamel let out a long, painful sigh. The {j-Diamonds} bricked on turn, but miracuously the {10-Clubs} spiked on the river!

"That's so sick," Dorfman spat out.

Duhamel shook his head in disbelief, but was very happy to rake in the pot, while Dorfman headed for the exit in 22nd place.

Voulgaris, Paur Out; 22 Remain

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

We just had two more eliminations in quick succession. That makes eight already this level, and we've still 15 minutes to go.

First Haralabos Voulgaris was all in with {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} against the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} of Massimiliano Martinez. The board came {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{10-Hearts}, and Voulgaris was eliminated in 24th place.

Then Taylor Paur committed the last of his short stack with {K-Clubs}{10-Spades} and needed help versus Brendon Rubie's {A-Diamonds}{8-Spades}. But the five community cards brought no such help to Paur, coming {9-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{7-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} and sending Paur out in 23rd.

Stivoli Clubs Paur

Facing a raise from under the gun, Mauro Stivoli moved all in on the button holding {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. Taylor Paur called from the blinds with {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}.

The {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop gave Stivoli a flush draw, and the {9-Diamonds} on the turn gave him outs to either two pair or trips.

"NINE!!!" Stivoli's rail shouted.

They didn't get a nine, rather a club - the {j-Clubs} to be exact - slammed on the river, giving Stivoli a club flush. His rail exploded, and after the chips were transferred, the two stacks look like this:

Cimerman Down

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Primoz Cimerman
Primoz Cimerman

We just had a three-way all-in involving Primoz Cimerman, Russell Carson, and Dan O'Brien. Cimerman held {A-Spades}{7-Clubs}, Carson {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}, and O'Brien {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}.

The board ran out {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}{2-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}, which meant the short-stacked Cimerman was out in 25th. O'Brien came away with 315,000 in his stack after the hand, while Carson presently sits with 140,000.
