Andrew Teng Tanks His Way to Great Laydown

Livello 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

A hand went down recently which displayed the high level of poker play that occurs deep in every WSOP tournament.

With the board reading {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} and a pot of over 55,000 at stake, Andrew Teng was forced to make an extremely difficult decision. His opponent in the big blind had fired a bet of 39,500 at Teng, and the young pro who has cashed three times in this year's series, went as deep into the tank as a player can go.

Teng studied the board for more than five minutes, until finally another player at the table called the clock. With a tournament supervisor on hand to begin the count, Teng finally decided to muck his hand face-up, and when the table saw his holding, they immediately understood what took Teng so long. He folded the {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}, good middle set, upon coming to the conclusion that his opponent had him beat.

While most amateur players, and many professionals as well, would make the crying call with Teng's set, the young tournament veteran released the monster seemingly with ease. He later told the winner of the pot, "I think if you had bet a little more, or a little less, I would've called." After the great laydown in a spot where many players would go broke, Teng preserved his chip stack and will live to fight another day.

Action Slowing

Livello 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

As the number of players is dwindling and the stacks are getting larger, it seems that the action has begun to slow fairly significantly.

Other than the occasional big pot, most hands are ending either preflop or after the flop. We're nearing the end of level 17 so we still have a little more than three levels of play left tonight. In that time we could actually see this field play down to the final three tables but only time will tell.

With a number of well known players still in the field the rail is filled with onlookers trying to catch a glimpse of the action. Will they get to see Phil Hellmuth continue his run at bracelet #12? Only time will tell!

David "ODB" Baker Says Gimme the Money On Day 2
David "ODB" Baker Says Gimme the Money On Day 2

We watched David "ODB" Baker try the classic squeeze play from the big blind holding {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}. Baker, dubbed "Other David Baker" by the poker media to differentiate him from David "Bakes" Baker, shoved all-in over the top of a large raise made by a player from under-the gun. Another player had called the original raise, and ODB wanted to end the hand immediately with his massive overbet. Unfortunately for him, the UTG player held {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} and was compelled to call him down.

Both players showed their hands and the race for the chips was underway. The player holding big slick quickly got a flat tire, however, when the flop fell {6-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{3-Hearts}. Baker's flopped set of sixes put him far ahead, and the {9-Spades} sealed the deal. After the meaningless {10-Clubs} on the river, ODB doubled his stack of 92,000 and now wits with just under 200,000, putting him in great shape to claim a seat on Day 3.

Mccaffrey Eliminates Cohen

Justin Cohen won't be able to best his second-place finish from Event #34: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em, as he was just eliminated from the tournament in a rather dramatic hand.

With the board already reading {q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and nearly 50,000 in the pot, Cohen bet out 30,000 and Glenn Mccaffrey called. The {9-Diamonds} fell on the turn and Cohen announced he was all in. Mccaffrey snap-called and tabled his {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds} while Cohen, who was caught bluffing, showed his {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}. The river was a brick for Cohen and he was sent to the rail.

Mccaffrey's stack is now a towering 445,000.

Hellmuth Reading Souls and Dodging Bullets Baby!

Phil Hellmuth At the Peak of His Powers Here On Day 2
Phil Hellmuth At the Peak of His Powers Here On Day 2

With Phill Hellmuth making yet another deep run in a WSOP event, the railbirds have arrived en masse to sweat the Poker Brat.

We caught Hellmuth engaging Clyde Gaskins in a war of words while contesting a heads-up pot. The banter was friendly by Hellmuth's standards, but he was clearly trying to impose his will on Gaskins, an amateur playing in his first WSOP tournament.

After Gaskins raised Hellmuth's big blind, making it 8,000 more to go, Hellmuth stared the amateur down before deciding on a min-raise to 16,000. Gaskins, clad in a black cowboy hat but trying to play the hero to Hellmuth's villain image, began to ponder his options while Hellmuth began to turn the screws.

"Don't give it all to me sir" Hellmuth warned him, before adding with a smile "Actually, it's OK if you want to do that."

Eventually Gaskins settled on a call and the dealer spread a flop of {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{10-Hearts} across the felt. Gaskins was in the small blind and acted first, checking it with a knock of the table. After Hellmuth had cut out enough chips for a 12,000 bet, he slowly slid on his trademark black shades and resumed his death stare. The intimidation did not faze Gaskins and he came along, bringing the {3-Spades} to the table on the turn.

After another check by Gaskins, Hellmuth aggressively stacked a bet of 24,000 and dropped it into the middle. The play sent Gaskins into the tank and he told the most famous poker player in the world "I ain't tryin' to put a bad beat on ya Phil!" before adding "I know ya gotta have queens or kings here."

Gaskins then asked the 11-time bracelet winner if he would show his cards in the event Gaskins folded. Hellmuth remained silent but nodded his approval to the agreement. After counting his own chips and looking over at Hellmuth's stack, Gaskins eventually found the fold button and tossed his cards in the muck.

With the railbirds standing on chairs to see the action, Hellmuth complied with the terms of his deal and showed Gaskins the monster he was representing: {A-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. The Poker Brat held just bottom pair on the turn with no draw to a flush. The amateur had obviously been bluffed out of his shows, but knowing that the deed was done by one of the best poker players on the planet soothed his pain. The friendly cowboy just grinned and offered a "nice hand sir" while Hellmuth did his best Cheshire Cat impression.

Woody Whamboozled

A player opened to 8,500 from the hi-jack and Charles "Woody" Moore three-bet to a little over 28,000 from the cutoff. The player on the button over-called and everyone else folded, including the original raiser.

The flop came {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and Moore immediately announced he was all in for about 37,000. His opponent asked for a count and fell into the tank. He eventually mustered the courage to announce, "Call."

Moore: {J-Clubs}{J-Spades}
Opponent: {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}

"That's what I thought you had," Moore said.

"That was tough," his opponent said in reference to calling.

The {5-Clubs} turn and {5-Spades} river were no help to Moore and he was sent to the rail.

Lichtenberger's Stack Swinging

Livello 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

In the first hand a player on the button opened and Andrew Lichtenberger re-raised all in for his last 44,000. The blinds folded and Lichtenberger's opponent called.

Lichtenberger: {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Opponent: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

The board ran out {A-Spades}{4-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and Lichtenberger got lucky once again to double.

A few hands later a short-stacked opponent went all in for about 35,000 from the hi-jack and was called by Lichtenberger from the cutoff. Everyone else folded.

Lichtenberger: {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}
Opponent: {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts}

Luckychewy's luck seemed to run out this time as the flop came {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{Q-Spades} and Lichtenberger was forced to double his opponent up.

After all that, Lichtenberger is currently sitting with 50,000.
