Event #50: $5,000 Triple Chance No-Limit Hold’em

Giorno 2 completo

Day 2 Is In The Books

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

Day 2 of Event #50 is in the books and just 34 players remain. With 263 competitors starting with chips, the action was fierce from the beginning, through the money bubble, all the way to the end when Vanessa Peng finished with the most chips. Some of the talented players we lost in action before the bubble popped included Jake Cody, Andy Black, Shannon Shorr, Justin Smith, and PokerStars Team Pro Lex Veldhuis. We also lost both sets of brothers that were still left in the tournament. Joe and Tony Hachem couldn’t make it to the money, nor could Michael and Nick Binger.

Day 2 wasn’t bad to all players though. 2011 gold bracelet winners Sam Stein, Allen Bari, and Mark Radoja all made it deep enough to cash but were unable to take it any further. John Racener, Josh Arieh, and PokerStars Team Pro’s Johnny Lodden and Gualter Salles suffered the same fate.

However, if Day 2 was notable for any particular reason, it was the constant revolving door of chip leaders. Mark Herm began the day as chip leader and is still alive with a stack of 265,000, while most of the other top Day 1 chip stacks have already exited. Ryan Young stepped up early and found himself atop the leaderboard, quickly followed by Dylan Wilkerson. Former Chess Prodigy, Jeff Sarwer was able to hit the 500,000 mark before anyone had passed 350,000. Andrew Savitz, Isaac Baron, Ben Volpe and Darryl Ronconi could all claim a Day 2 chip lead at some point. Most notably, however, was the stack that Eric Froehlich had acquired with about two hours left in the day. He was just shy of a million chips with the second place stack still at 600,000. While he finished at only 399,000, even now the Day 2 chip leader, Vanessa Peng, has just 801,000.

Speaking of Peng, she probably had already circled tomorrow’s date on her calendar but for a different reason. Tomorrow at noon, the popular Ladies Event starts and now Peng will likely not be one of the entrants. Given that she is the lone remaining woman and the player that everyone will be chasing tomorrow, she is probably not that disappointed.

With such a skilled list of players still remaining including David “Bakes” Baker, Vitaly Lunkin, Barry Greenstein, Jeff Williams, and the aforementioned Froehlich, tomorrow will be some of the best competition the Rio will see all summer. The action starts back up at 2:30 p.m. local time so come back to catch all of the action.

Vanessa Peng Doubles Into The Overnight Chip Lead

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

On the last hand of the night, and we mean the very last hand of the night, Vanessa Peng doubled up through Isaac Baron to take a huge pot and the chip lead. We missed the preflop action, but Peng and Baron got into a raising war that saw all the chips get into the middle preflop.

Peng: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Baron: {a-}{k-}

As is often the case, it was a coin flip that would decide a huge pot late in the tournament. Peng stay ahead on the flop, as it came {4-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs}. The turn gave Baron no help, coming the {4-Spades}, and the river secured the win for Peng, coming {3-Diamonds}. After Peng bagged her chips, she had 801,000, and she will come into play tomorrow having everyone else covered. Baron is still healthy, ending the night with 407,000

Bakes Pads His Stack

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

While his brother from another mother David "ODB" Baker was knocked out earlier, David Bakes Baker is carrying on the "family" legacy, as he has just taken down a nice pot to strengthen his standing as we near the end of play. We came to the table as the board had been dealt out {7-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{7-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{j-Clubs}. Baker had put out a bet of 77,000, which appeared to be just under a pot sized bet. His opponent, Mark Herm, was deep in the tank, moving the chips for the call in and out of his stack multiple times. Finally, after about two minutes of thinking, he flung in the call, and Bakes showed {9-Spades}{7-Spades} for flopped trips. Herm mucked, and Baker upped his total to 490,000, good enough for the top 10 in the tournament by our counts.

No Chip and a Chair Story Here

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

Jonathan Spinks had 228,000 and Ryan Young had 227,000. That was the count down by the dealer when Spinks' {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs} couldn't catch up to the {a-Spades}{k-Spades} of Young.

With just the ante left, he had {7-Clubs}{3-Spades} against the {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} of Ben Volpe. He flopped made pair with the {7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{4-Clubs} flop and actually started roooting against himself. He got his wish though with the {10-Clubs} turn that left him drawing dead. He exits the tournament and we are down to four tables with just 15 minutes left to play tonight.

Salles Familiar With Tough Races

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

We missed the preflop action, but we understand that Mike Fosco cold four-bet shoved for 96,000 with {A-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}. It looks like Gualter Salles was the three-bettor from the table layout, and the former F1 racer made the call to put Fosco at risk. They were flipping, and Salles' growing rail of Brazilians sprang to their feet as their man showed down {J-Spades} {J-Diamonds}.

The {7-Spades} {7-Hearts} {4-Clubs} flop was clean for Salles, but the {A-Spades} on fourth street drew a unison hiss from his rail. The river came the {4-Hearts}, and Salles is forced to part with about half his stack. He's down to about 95,000 now, doubling Fosco up over 200,000 in the process.

E-Fro Takes Big Hit

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

We didn't catch the action, but when we came over to Eric Froehlich's table, he was counting out stacks of chips that were being handed over to Narendra Banwari. Banwari held {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, and the board read out {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. According to Froehlich's twitter, he had flopped the nut straight, but it did him no good. With that pot, Banwari has vaulted up to 580,000, while Froehlich dropped down to 430,000, still above average in the room.

The David Baker Dream is Over

Livello 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

With under 40 players left, we still had both David Bakers left in the tournament and the dream of having the most confusing heads up match in the history of the WSOP was still alive.

However, David "ODB" Baker just hit the rail. He got his last 140,000 in with {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} versus the {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} of Yann Enzinger. The board ran out {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{10-Spades}{3-Spades}, killing not only the tournament life of Baker, but our dream of a David Baker heads up duel.
