Gary Bolden Day 1 Chip Leader; Pescatori, Gomes, & Tehan Hots on His Heels

Livello 8 : 300/600, 0 ante
Day 1 Chip Leader Gary Bolden
Day 1 Chip Leader Gary Bolden

After a delayed start, Event #57 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better got underway with 352 players entering the event, nearly 25% more than last year's field. That meant the runners were competing for their share of a $1,654,400 prize pool, $397,073 of which was reserved for first place. By the end of the night, approximately 189 players remained with Gary Bolden appearing to be the Day 1 chip leader (98,300).

Hot on his heels are Eric Crain (96,500), Austin Marks (89,500), Max Pescatori (72,000), Alexandre Gomes (70,400), and Joe Tehan (69,500).

The last tournament before the Main Event drew some of the biggest names in poker; however, not all of them were able to gain momentum. Greg Raymer, Daniel Negreanu, Erick Lindgren, Mitch Schock, Humberto Brenes, Sammy Farha, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Tom Dwan, David “Devilfish” Ulliott, and Chris Bell, who will not be defending his 2010 title.

While dozens of pros hit the rail, others were able to navigate their way through the field and have advanced to Day 2. They include the always outspoken Mike “The Mouth” Matusow (20,700); the only remaining former Main Event winner, Huck Seed (14,400); online powerhouse David “Doc” Sands (33,600); all-time money winner Erik Seidel (57,500); and consummate grinder and structure guru, Allen Kessler (58,500).

The tournament will resume tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. PST and we expect it’ll be a day full of action as the players do their best to reach the money. Join us then as we bring you all the hands, chip counts, and eliminations from the floor of the $5K PLO8.

The Final Four

Livello 8 : 300/600, 0 ante

We've reached that magical ten-minute mark in Day 1, and the clock has been paused. We'll play four more hands at each table, color up and race off the green T25 chips, and bag up for the night.

Nobody Can Spare a Quarter For Hachem

Livello 8 : 300/600, 0 ante

A player in middle position raised to 2,200, and Joe Hachem got his last ~9,500 into the middle to put himself at risk. Cards up, gents.

Showdown
Hachem: {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {2-Diamonds}
Opponent: {A-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} {2-Hearts}

Mr. Opponent flopped a pair as it came {8-Spades} {9-Clubs} {J-Hearts}, and the turn and river came the {Q-Diamonds} and the {6-Diamonds}. "Ah, three-quarters," Hachem lamented, incorrectly thinking he'd chopped the low. After just a moment, he realized his mistake. "Ah, no low." And with that, he was gone.

Watkinson Stacks One

Livello 8 : 300/600, 0 ante

Under the gun, Dan Heimiller limped in, and a player in middle position raised to 2,500. Lee Watkinson called in position, Heimiller folded, and it was heads-up to the flop.

The dealer spread out {2-Diamonds} {9-Clubs} {10-Hearts}, and the raiser continued out with another 6,500 chips. Watkinson tanked for a while, then plunked the call into the pot. On the turn, the {2-Spades} paired the board, and the bettor slid his last ~5,300 into the middle. This time, Watkinson snap-called, and the cards were on their backs.

Showdown
Watkinson: {A-Spades} {2-Clubs} {J-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}
Opponent: {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {4-Clubs}

Mr. Opponent's kings had been run down by Watkinson's deuce, and the latter improved further to a full house as the {Q-Clubs} filled out the board. With that, Watkinson sends one out, moving up to about 46,000 in the process.
