Event #19: $2,500 Limit Hold'em / Six Handed

Day 1 of Event 19 Set to Begin

What they're all playing for - the WSOP Gold Bracelet
What they're all playing for - the WSOP Gold Bracelet

The 2011 World Series of Poker has been, among other things, the year of the record-breaking fields. Today, we had another extraordinary turnout in our 12 p.m. tournament and we expect yet another large field in this afternoon's Limit Holdem / Six Handed tournament.

Last year, Dutch Boyd and Brian Meindings found themselves heads up after conquering a field of 384 players. Meindings held about a two-to-one chip lead when the heads-up duel began. Boyd chose his spots carefully though, and he battled his way back into contention and back into a chip lead within a level or so of back-and-forth action. It wasn't an easy put-away by any means. Meindings and Boyd traded big shots back and forth for hours but eventually Boyd was able to come out ahead. With the victory Boyd won $234,065 and his second WSOP gold bracelet.

The six handed format should create a lot of action from all players early and often. With many notable names already walking around the tables here in the Amazon Room, this is sure to be a tournament to keep an eye on. As always, PokerNews, will have all your live reporting needs and will covering the action from start to finish. Today we begin at 5 p.m. local time so don't go anywhere!

Rule Check for Mr. Spell Check

Livello 1 : 50/75, 0 ante

Richard Brodie, the inventor of Microsoft Word and the red squiggly line for spelling errors, had the floor called over to his table just a few hands into the tournament. He was in the big blind and the action had folded to the small blind. His opponent had attempted to raise by throwing out a 100 chip on top of his two 25 chips that represented his small blind.

The ruling, however, is that since the small blind had not yet completed a call before the over-chip entered the pot and he had not announced a raise, his action was considered a call. Brodie, who checked his option, told his opponent that he was calling the floor now so that it doesn't become an issue later when the blinds get higher.

With just the two blinds in the pot, the flop came {2-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{q-Spades} and now his opponent got in the bet. Brodie called and the turn was the {7-Spades}. The opponent bet again, this time 150 for a big bet. Brodie raised and the opponent called. The river was the {4-Diamonds} and Brodie bet when it was checked to him. After another call he showed {Q-Clubs}{6-Spades} and it was good enough to win the hand.

He may have cost himself a bet preflop by calling over the floor or may have made about 600 chips by being able to see a flop with just a check. Either way, he now sits with about 8,000.

Another for Veldhuis

Livello 1 : 50/75, 0 ante

Lex Veldhuis opened with a raise from under the gun and Shannon Shorr called from the big blind. The flop came {Q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and Shorr check-raised a bet from Veldhuis which was called.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and again Shorr bet and was called by Veldhuis. The river was the {j-Hearts} and this time Veldhuis raised a bet by Shorr. After a minute or so of thought Shorr made the call and Veldhuis flipped over rivered trips with {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}, good enough to rake in the pot.

Katchalov Slips out of the Gate

Livello 1 : 50/75, 0 ante

Eugene Katchalov raised from the button and found a caller in the big blind. The flop ran out {a-Spades}{2-Spades}{2-Hearts}.

The big blind checked, Katchalov bet, and the big blind called. The {3-Hearts} fell on the turn. Both players checked.

The river brought the {6-Clubs}. The big blind led out and Katchalov called .

Katchalov folded his hand into the muck after his opponent flipped up {k-Spades}{3-Spades}.

...and he's at the Table of Death.

Dutch Boyd won this event last year, and he's currently seated at table 365 with Chris Vitch, Jennifer Harman, Jameson Painter, Justin Bonomo and Eric Froehlich. The six players have won a combined six WSOP bracelets and over $9 million in live tournaments.

Not too shabby.
