Negreanu and Juanda

Omaha 8

An opponent in the UTG +1 position raised and the action folded to Daniel Negreanu who called from middle position, as did John Juanda from the big blind to go three ways into a flop that read {2-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{J-Hearts}.

Juanda bet, the UTG +1 player raised and Negreanu called, as did Juanda before he checked the turn of the {8-Spades}. The UTG +1 player bet, Negreanu called and Juanda called before checking again on the river of the {J-Clubs}.

This time, the UTG +1 bet all-in for 400 and Negreanu snap-folded before Juanda made a crying call, only to muck after the UTG +1 player showed {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{6-Clubs} to scoop the pot.

Sweet Pot for Sugarbear

Omaha 8

On a flop of {6-Hearts}{7-Spades}{10-Clubs}, Thomas Keller checked from the small blind, as did Bryan Micon and Josh Arieh from middle position before Al "Sugarbear" Barbieri bet from the button. Keller then check-raised his option and Micon called, but Arieh got out of the way before Barbieri called to go three ways to the turn of the {7-Diamonds}.

Keller and Micon checked to Barbieri who opened the betting, but Keller was the only caller, making it heads-up to the river of the {J-Spades}, where Keller check-folded to Barbieri. Barbieri flashed {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} before raking in the pot.

Liu Avoids Wheel of Misfortune

Omaha 8

Xuan Liu was all in for her final 3,700 on a flop of {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{2-Hearts} holding {A-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds} but was up against another player's big drawing {J-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Clubs} which had nine outs for a scoop plus twelve more for a chop. However, the board contrived to bring the {9-Spades} on the turn (swing and a miss) - then the {2-Clubs} on the river meant Liu won the entire pot to secure her double up.

Mariakis Slips

Omaha 8

The action folded around to Michael Mariakis who raised from the cutoff; he found one caller in the small blind before both players checked the flop of {3-Hearts}{A-Spades}{4-Clubs}. The small blind then bet on the turn of the {Q-Hearts} and Mariakis called, only to fold after the small blind fired a second shell on the river of the {9-Diamonds}.

Mariakis may be down, but is still holding on with 15,500 in chips.

That's a Wrap - Mosseri is on Top of the Mountain

Jonathan Spinks (during Event #38): one of the big two stacks returning tomorrow
Jonathan Spinks (during Event #38): one of the big two stacks returning tomorrow

Day 1 of WSOP Event #47 is in the books and what a day it turned out to be! From 450 of poker’s finest, we’re now down to 201 and from our counts, it appears that Abe Mosseri is the big man on campus with 64,200 in chips. Biting on his heels is Jonathan Spinks (43,600), Tom Whitehair (42,300) and Jim Ferrel (40,700).

Other big names to have survived the choppy seas include Tom Dwan, Al “Sugarbear” Barbieri, Dan Heimiller, Barry Greenstein, Barny Boatman, Victor Ramdin, Josh Arieh, Richard Ashby, David Chiu, Mike Sexton and Eric Baldwin.

However, for those who managed to survived, there were plenty more that didn’t make it, with David Steicke, Allen Bari, George Danzer, Jason Mercier, Cyndy Violette, Shawn Buchanan, John Juanda, Jon Turner and Daniel Negreanu just some of the names who are listed in today’s tournament obituaries.

It’s been an impressive turnout for this event, which is brand new to the WSOP for 2011. Generating a total prize pool of almost $1.024 million, the winner of this event will be walking away with $255,959 and of course, the coveted gold bracelet.

Still, we’ve got at least two days to go until we find out our winner, with Day 2 resuming tomorrow at 3pm PST (GMT -7) in the Amazon Room. PokerNews will be on deck once again to bring you all the live updates, so be sure to join us then. Thanks for staying with us and until then – ciao for now!
