Event #51: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better

Giorno 2 iniziato

Speir, Sands, Gonzalez Lead Going Into Day 2

Everyone and their mother came out to play Event No. 51, the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better yesterday. We had a whopping 946 players put up the $1,500 buy-in to take their shot at part of the $1,227,100 prize pool, and of course, the gold bracelet. Each and everyone of them was looking to follow in the footsteps of Steve Jelenik, who last year bested a field of 847 to win $245,871.Needless to say, this year's field is bigger, better, and likely the biggest Pot-Limit Omaha-8 tournament of all time.

This year, the winner will be taking home $268,235, and the man best positioned to make a run at the top prize is William Speir, who appears to be the Day 1 chip leader (115,300) with 134 players remaining.

Unfortunately not everyone was as lucky as Speir. Some of the players eliminated on Day 1 included Phil Laak, Tom "durrrr" Dwan, Daniel Negreanu, Eric Baldwin, Marcel Luske, Mike Matusow, Greg Raymer, Jonathan Duhamel, and Phil Hellmuth.

While many of poker's biggest names failed to survive, we do have some big names joining us on Day 2. Alexandre Gomes, Kathy Liebert, Alex Wice, Alexander Kostritsyn, Erick Lindgren, Erik Seidel, and Joe Hachem will all return today to the Amazon Room and continue their quest for a bracelet. Joining them will be big stacks David "Doc" Sands (94,000), Fabrizio Gonzalez (90,300), Tom Chambers (82,800), and Robert Campbell (74,100).

Day 2 is set to resume at 2:30 p.m. PST here in the purple section of the Amazon Room, so be sure to join the PokerNews Live Reporting Team as we continue to bring you up to the minute coverage and play ten more levels towards setting a final table.

A Chop and a Crease

Livello 11 : 600/1,200, 0 ante

Patrick Buckley limped from under the gun, and it folded back to Antony Lellouche who called from the small blind. Alexander Kostritsyn checked in the big blind, and the flop came {5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts}. All three checked. The turn was the {7-Spades} and Lellouche bet 1,200. Kostritsyn called and Buckley folded.

The river was the {4-Spades}. Lellouche bet 2,000 this time, Kostritsyn raised, and Lellouche called. Lellouche showed {A-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{3-Spades} for the nut low and a wheel, while Kostritsyn showed {A-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}{2-Spades} for a full house to take the high.

As the pot was chopped, an examination of the {2-Spades} revealed it to be creased -- a problem that has come up more than once this Series -- and the deck was removed. Kostritsyn has 32,000 now and Lellouche 41,000.

Day 2 Dreamin'

Livello 11 : 600/1,200, 0 ante

For many amateur players, making Day 2 and getting that much closer to the money is the ultimate sign of success in a tournament. There's nothing quite like bagging chips and leaving the casino knowing that you outlasted the majority of players in the field and that you get to come back the next day and continue your quest for a bracelet and a huge payday. For many, the beginnings of a Day 2 are also make it or break it time. Players will end Day 1 with the shortest of short stacks just so they can come back on Day 2 and maybe, just maybe, go on a super-heater and make a deep run.

Definitely look for lots of eliminations in the opening levels as the blinds continue to rise and those short stacks to take their shots early and often

Short Stacks Busting, Doubling Like Flies

Livello 11 : 600/1,200, 0 ante

Early in day 2, many of the short stacked players who survived day 1 seem to have had no problem getting it in so far.

One such hand was where Kevin Armstrong raised to 4,200 under the gun and Ryan Harrington raised all in as the next to act. It was folded around to James Jarrell in the big blind who called all in as did Armstrong who was covered by Harrington by only a few thousand. The players then flipped their cards.

Armstrong: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Harrington: {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{2-Diamonds}
Jarrell: {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades}

The board ran out {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{A-Clubs} to give Armstrong top set which won him both the main pot and side pot. The hand left Harrington crippled while Jarrell was eliminated.

Speir Quarters Oliveira

Livello 11 : 600/1,200, 0 ante

Michael Caetano opened with a pot-sized raise from under the gun, Marco Oliveira called from the button, and chip leader William Speir called as well from the small blind. The flop came {5-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{7-Spades}. Speir bet the pot, Caetano got out, and Oliveira called. The turn was the {J-Clubs}. This time Speir bet 15,000, Oliveira raised all in, and Speir quickly called.

Speir {A-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Oliveira {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

Both had the nut low, and Speir had the current high with his pair of sevens. The {Q-Hearts} on the river didn't change things, and Oliveira was quartered. He's down under 15,000 now, while Speir adds to his lead, moving up to 127,000.

Gomes Takes A Big Hit. Rowsome Doubles

Alexandre Gomes came into today as one of our top 10 in chips, but has fallen out of that category after losing a big hand early here on Day 2.

Preflop, Gomes raised it up to 3,600 and got a call from Adrienne Rowsome and Larry Fallek who was subsequently all in.

The flop came {3-Clubs}{q-Spades}{6-Spades} and Gomes potted for 7,600. Rowsome re-raised all in for a total of 14,200 and Gomes called.

Rowsome: {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}
Gomes: {a-Spades}{2-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

By the end, the full board read out {3-Clubs}{q-Spades}{6-Spades}{2-Clubs}{a-Clubs} and Rowsome scooped the pot with the runner-runner club flush and {4-}{7-} low. Gomes has fallen down to just around 60,000 and Rowsome is up near the 40,000 mark. We did not catch Fallek's hand, but he was beat and hit the rail

The Buffet is Now Closed

Livello 11 : 600/1,200, 0 ante

Michael Sweaney went all in for 2,300 from middle position and said, “All you can eat baby, buffet’s open”. Sweaney, who started the day with 25,800 in chips, then noticed us watching and asked if we say his aces get cracked before which we didn’t but that's what must have left him with less than two big blinds.

Back to the hand, David Buell called in the cutoff as did the small blind Trevor Whiteway. The flop rolled out {J-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and and Whiteway checked. Buell potted for 8,100 and Whiteway made the call. Both players checked the {8-Hearts} turn but when the {3-Clubs} hit the river, Whiteway set his opponent all in for the few hundred he had left. Buell made the call as the players turned up their hands.

Sweaney: {Q-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Clubs}
Buell: {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Whiteway: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}{8-Spades}{4-Spades}

Although Sweaney had turned a flush and had a six-low, Buell had rivered the nut-high with quads while Whiteway held the nut-low. This meant that Sweaney was eliminated as his two opponents split the pot. Looks like the buffet is now closed for Sweaney.
