Event #8: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Giorno 1a iniziato

Small Buy-in, Massive Field

Welcome to Day 1a of Event #8: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em at the 2011 World Series of Poker. With this being the first $1,000 event of the Series and having two starting days, you can expect a massive turnout of payers. Last year, this event attracted 4,345 players with Aadam Daya taking home over $625,000 for first place!

This year should be much of the same numbers wise. Most of the fields so far have been up in numbers, with the others still showing a lot of interest as well. We can expect to see another 1,500-2,000-player field today to kick off this event while the other half will be rolling in on Day 1b.

Things are set to kick off at 12:00 PM PT and you can bet that PokerNews will be on hand to bring you all of the live coverage from the tournament floor.

Selbst Playing "Conservatively"

Livello 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

When we caught up with the action, Vanessa Selbst, who was in the big blind, was facing a bet by the small blind with the board reading {a-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}. Selbst stated "I'm gonna play conservatively here" before making the call.

The other player revealed his {a-Hearts}{3-Clubs} for a pair of aces while Selbst flipped over the {10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a flush.

"Wow, that is conservative," said the player holding ace-three. Selbst replied with "I thought you had a flush too."

After the hand Selbst's stack was around 5,000.

Duhamel Off to a Good Start

Livello 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

On a {8-Spades}{5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{10-Clubs} board, Jonathan Duhamel checked and his opponent bet 800. Duhamel min-raised to 1,600 and his opponent folded.

The very next hand, Duhamel raised from under the gun to 75. The same opponent from the previous hand was next to act and made it 200. It was folded back around to Duhamel who put the player all in and the opponent made the call. Duhamel showed {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} and had his opponent who held {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} crushed. The board ran out {A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts} as Duhamel chipped up to 6,500 while his opponent hit the rail.

Early Elimination

Livello 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

As a result of the small (3,000) starting stacks, it isn't surprising to see players taking risks early.

With the board reading {k-Hearts}{9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} a player had bet 1,100 and Brian Wong pushed all in. The other player looked almost sick while deciding if he was willing to put the rest of his chips into the pot. He eventually made the call and found that his {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds} for a flopped set had been bested by Wong's {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a turned straight. The river brought the {7-Hearts} and Wong sent the other player to the rail.

After the hand Wong's stack was up to around 6,300.
