Wiegmann Bags the Day 1b Chip Lead; Leng, Affleck and Conniff Loom Large

Livello 14 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Ryan Leng
Ryan Leng

After a 12-year hiatus, the PokerStars North American Poker Tour Las Vegas returned and brought with it $1,500,000 guaranteed prize pool in the Main Event. With action going down at Resorts World Las Vegas, players looking to claim the title showed up to sit down and march toward a bag.

The second of six Day 1 flights played into the early hours of the morning and gathered a field of 33 runners, which included multiple bracelet holders and past PokerStars title winners. Of those 33 hopefuls, only eight found a bag for Day 2 play, when all remaining players will join together on Thursday.

Bagging the biggest stack of the day was Cody Wiegmann, who will come back to 242,000 when play resumes. Finishing with a top three stack is three-time bracelet winner Ryan Leng, who just a level before bagging was down to 17,000 before going on a run to end the night. Matt Affleck (123,000), Mark Ioli (32,500), poker YouTuber Ryne "Pyzza" Teston (78,000) and Asher Conniff, who walked in right as late registration was about to close just before 2:00 a.m. and built a stack worth 88,000, will all return for the Day 2 session as well.

Action of the Day

While the field was small, the action was big as very early in the day; players were more than willing to make a big river bluff or get in a couple hundred blinds after a six-bet preflop. Notable players that fell victim to the action of the day include Tom Orpaz and Matthew Wantman, who exited in tenth place at the end of the night to narrow the remaining field to a single table.

The final minutes of the day were especially brutal for Michael Wang, who had built a big stack earlier in the day and continued doing well until he found himself on the wrong end of a massive blind versus blind confrontation with Affleck that left Wang with just a few blinds. He'd bust a short time later, just after 5 a.m., on the second-to-last hand of the night, which had to be a frustrating way to end the day.

Day 1c starts on Tuesday at 11 a.m. local time and is scheduled to play 14 levels, each lasting 40 minutes. With three more flights to follow before all remaining players converge on Thursday, November 9th, the field is expected to grow with more strong competition showing up to stake their claim as champion.

Leng Finds A Double

Livello 13 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Ryan Leng

A player in late position raised to 4,000 only to see a three-bet come from Zachary McDiarmid on the button in the amount of 12,000. Ryan Leng wasted no time in jamming from the big blind for 17,000, getting a quick fold from the late position player before McDiarmid made the call to set up a runout with Leng at risk.

Button: QQ

The 9A10 flop left Leng needing help as he said, "Seven", already starting to call for the runner-runner straight.

The turn brought the 6, bringing in the straight draw for Leng who said, "Yeah, seven" with a laugh before watching as the 7 peeled off on the river, completing the straight and stealing the pot away from the queens of McDiarmid.

Leng Gets Sneaky

Livello 12 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

Matt Affleck opened under the gun to 3,500 before it folded all the way to Ryan Leng in the big blind who flat called.

The Q610 flop hit the felt and action checked to Affleck who continued for 6,500. Leng snap called.

The 6 landed on the turn and action checked to Affleck who slowed down and checked it back.

The 10 landed on the river and Leng checked once more. Affleck checked it back and Leng quickly said "I win." as he tabled KK.

Affleck smiled and flashed AxKx as he mucked. There could have been a lot more chips in the middle preflop but he was able to dodge the potential cooler.

Ryne Teston opened to 1,200 from the cutoff before Daniel Balilti three-bet the button to 4,700. It folded back to Teston who snap four-bet to 16,300.

Balilti sat in the tank for about a minute before announcing he was all in for 30,800. Teston called and the cards hit their backs.

Daniel Balilti: KK
Ryne Teston: JJ

The full board ran out AAQ2K and Teston would take a big hit to his chip lead as Balilti got the pure double.

Teston Puts Opponent to the Test; Gets Big River Value

Livello 3 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Ryne Teston
Ryne Teston

A player in the cutoff raised to 700 only to see Ryne "Pyzza" Teston three-bet to 2,500 from the big blind. The cutoff made a quick call to bring out the QK7.

Both players checked through, prompted the dealer to burn and turn the A.

Teston paused briefly before reaching for chips and putting out a bet worth 3,000. The cutoff made the call to watch as the 8 fell on the river.

Teston sat stoic for a few seconds before grabbing 9,000 and tossing it into the middle, causing the player in the cutoff to enter the tank.

After about two minutes of through, the cutoff counted out a call and tossed it into the pot to see Teston turn over the KK, getting a quick fold out of the cutoff and prompting the dealer to send the pot in Teston's direction.

De La Cruz Puts in the Six-Bet but is Way Behind

Livello 2 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante
Antonio De La Cruz
Antonio De La Cruz

Antonio De La Cruz had just won a sizable blind versus blind pot and the next hand was on the button and raised to 500.

The small blind sat in the tank for a moment and then put in a three-bet to 2,100. It was back on De La Cruz who put in a warm four-bet to 7,000.

The small blind then fired in the five-bet to 15,000. Without thinking for more than a few seconds, De La Cruz six-bet jammed and got snap called.

The cards hit their backs and De La Cruz was in rough shape.

Small blind: AA
Antonio De La Cruz: 1010

De La Cruz needed a ton of help from the dealer and he came through with the 7610 flop. The 5 turn and J river did not improve the small blind and De La Cruz would earn a chip-leading pot and score the knockout.
