Event #20: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Giorno 1 iniziato

Another Stimulus Tournament Preparing to Start

Event #20, $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em
Event #20, $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Event #20 is the second of five $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em tournaments at the 2011 World Series of Poker. The first, Event #8, attracted an astounding 4,178 players and amassed a $3,760,020 prize pool, including $611,185 for first. After a grueling final table and marathon heads up battle, Sean Getzwiller took the money, bragging rights and most importantly, the WSOP gold bracelet.

Last year, the second "stimulus tournament", as it is fondly called, saw 3,042 players register and after five days (including two Day 1's), Stephen Gee stood atop them all. Gee picked away at the final table all day, finding ways to build his stack without confrontation. Before long, he found himself heads up with a chip lead against the talented Matt Vance. After two hours of grinding down his opponent, he found the situation he was looking for when his {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} got it in against the {q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} of Vance and held. For the win, Gee received $472,479 in prize money along with his first gold bracelet.

Today's action is set to kick off at 12 p.m. and as usual PokerNews will have all the updates covered from end to end. Make sure you stick close when the cards begin to fly in about 15 minutes so you don't miss any of the action!

Notable Players

It almost feels like the Main Event here as the entire Pavillion Room, including the cash and satellite areas, as well as pieces of the Amazon Room, are now host to players in this enormous Day 1 field. After a quick lap around all of the tournament areas, here are some familiar faces in the mix:

Daniel Makowsky (Recently came third in the $1,500 No-Limit Shootout)
Jeff Madsen
Ari Engel
Eric Baldwin
Justin Young
Nikolay Edvakov
David Pham
Andy Black
Jeff Sarwer
Tom McEvoy
Gavin Smith

More Players

The Pavilion and Amazon Room's are just sprawling with Event #20 tables and the current count of players is nearing the 3,000 mark. We continue to find notable pros scattered among the hundreds of amateurs in today's field. Some of the recent finds include Tony Dunst, Andre Akkari, Veronica Dubal, Kathy Liebert, Gavin Griffin, Tim West, Kevin Saul, Jennifer Tilly, Faraz Jaka, James Dempsey, Soi Nguyen, Tyler Bonkowski ($3,000 Limit Hold'em Champion) and Liv Boeree.

Madsen Chips Up Early

We came in to a hand where 2006 World Series Player of the Year, Jeff Madsen had bet 75 on a flop of {3-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{10-Spades} and gotten a call from the player in the small blind.

The turn was the {Q-Diamonds} and the small blind checked. Madsen bet 150, and the player folded. Madsen has clearly been active at his table early on as he has already doubled his starting stack.

Tilly Takes One Down

Livello 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

Jennifer Tilly has been seen playing many events this year and already has a cash in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em tournament. Today she is off to a good start in Event #20.

In a raised pot, she led out with a 200 chip bet on a {5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} flop and the player in position called. The turn was the {7-Diamonds} and both players checked. The river was the {5-Diamonds} and this time Tilly bet 300. Her opponent thought for a second and folded, giving the pot to Tilly.

Smith Four-Bet Shoves

Livello 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

A player in the hijack raised to 75 and Gavin Smith defended his big blind by calling.

The flop came {2-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and Smith check-raised his opponents bet of 150 to 375. The opponent quickly made it 1,000 total before Smith instantly moved all in for 2,975. His opponent thought for a minute and gave up his hand. With the pot, Smith chips up to 4,100.

RandALLin Sticks to His Name

Livello 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

Randal Flowers was almost down and out, but took down a small pot when all in to stay alive.

On the flop, the table checked around to a player in late position who bet 250, the rest of the table folded, and Flowers went all in for his last 1,100. The player in late position elected to fold, and Flowers is left with around 1,800 in chips. Short, but not out of it.
