The Rio was filled to the brim with players for today's Day 1 of the most recent $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em. What started with 3,175 is now only 342 and at the end of Day 1 we are only 20 players from the money. Our chip leader (and as far as we can tell the only player over 100,000 chips) is Doug Lang with 119,700. Justin Sloan also came close to the 100,000 mark with 99,400. The story of the day however has to be PokerStars Team Pro Lex Veldhuis who was down to only 800 chips early on but ended Day 1 with 73,000 and near the top of our counts.
Other notables making it to Day 2 are Amnon Filippi (65,400), Yuval Bronshtein (52,400), John Phan (42,700), Jason Somerville (36,500), Scott Montgomery (32,500), Tim West (26,000), Taylor Paur (25,000), Shaun Deeb (24,000) and Gavin Smith (9,000).
Notables who didn't make it to Day 2 include, Matt Jarvis, Randall Flowers, Galen Hall, Joe Cada, Faraz Jaka, Jeff Sarwer, Antonio Esfandiari, Josh Brikis, Scotty Nguyen, Justin Young, Jeff Madsen, Liv Boeree, Eric Baldwin and many others.
Like we said, we are only 20 players from the money, so we can assume it will be an intense start to Day 2. But when the money bubble bursts we should see players being eliminated like wildfire. While we certainly won't make it to a final table tomorrow, we should see some real chip leaders emerge as the field thins and the bracelet becomes a real possibility. The tournament director just announced that we will be playing three more hands before bagging up for Day 2. With the board reading 361 for remaining players we will likely get right up to the money bubble without hitting it.
Jason Somerville raised it up to 1,600 preflop and got called by the big blind.

It folded around to Yuval Bronshtein in the small blind who completed the bet before the big blind raised to 2,100. Bronshtein re-raised enough to force the big blind all in and he called.
Bronshtein was far behind the 
of his opponent with just 
. He would have to wait all the way to the river on a 
board to get there but that is all that matters. With the pot, he now has a 41,000 stack as we near the end of Day 1.
Brett Shaffer raised to 2,200 in middle position and the player on his left three-bet to 4,900. It folded back to Shaffer who thought for about a minute before moving all in. His opponent wasted no time in calling and the hands were turned face up.

and Shaffer's King's held. The two chip stacks were nearly identical but Shaffer's 33,000 edged out the 32,000 and change of his opponent and Shaffer earns a 72,000 stack and a notch on his belt.
