Event #38: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em

Giorno 1 iniziato

Hello From The Rio!

Chips
Chips

Welcome back! We are coming at you from the Pavilion Room for Day 1 of Event #38: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em. This is the fourth installment of the $1,500 open buy in series, and we are expecting another large field for this one.

Foster Hays won the first $1,500 event where he topped a field of 3157 players for a whopping $735,400 first place prize! Since that win, Kirk Caldwell and 2010 WPT Player of the Year Andy Frankenberger have also won bracelets in these events. All three have gotten at least 2,500 people, and we are expecting that same amount today!

Action is set to get underway in about 30 minutes. We will be playing 10 levels before the players tag and bag and come back tomorrow. Stay tuned to Pokernews all day for the best live coverage in the world! Thanks for following along!

Smorgasboard of Shorthanded Tables

Livello 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

Many players in today's field have already registered for the tournament but are opting to arrive a little late. This has led to play beginning shorthanded at an overwhelming majority of our tables today. We have spotted six-handed, five-handed, and at a few tables, even four-handed play as competitors continue to wander into the Pavilion Room.

With a very forgiving structure in the opening levels, many professional players elect to skip the first two entirely and will be taking their seats just prior to the beginning of level three. In the meanwhile, the thousands of players who have arrived on time are being forced to slightly alter their strategy to adapt to shorthanded play.

Pros and Notables In Today's Field

Within the massive field of players on hand for this event, we have spotted some notable players to keep an eye on. Among the professionals we will be watching are Jeff Madsen, former WSOP Player of the Year, David Williams, who finished 2nd in the 2004 Main Event, and Jon "PearlJammer" Turner, who finished 3rd in a $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em tournament this year.

While the smaller buy in events here at the WSOP are generally geared towards amateurs hoping to make a splash, there are many pros here today who are ready to do a little fishing.

Haxton Hacked Back Down to Size

A player in middle position raised to 175 and picked up two callers, including Issac Haxton sitting in the small blind. The flop fell {5-Clubs}{8-Spades}{A-Diamonds} and after Haxton tapped the table, the original raiser fired a bet of 325, forcing a fold from the unknown opponent.

Haxton decided to see another card and made the call, bringing the {Q-Clubs} to the table. After the action was checked to him again, the raiser slid 800 forward and Haxton finally surrendered. Even after dropping this pot, Haxton still sits with 6,100 chips, meaning he powered up early on the tournament.
