Coren Flushes, Opponent Blushes

Livello 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

A player in middle position opened, and Vicky Coren called from the button. Both blinds came along as well, and the quartet together saw a flop of {7-Hearts}{2-Spades}{9-Spades}. The small blind led with a bet of 800 -- a bit over half the pot -- and it folded around to Coren. "Okay," she exhaled, tossing out the calling chips.

"I have quite a good hand, do you?" asked Coren of her opponent as the brought the {9-Hearts}. Her opponent wordlessly responded by tapping the table, and Coren quickly checked as well.

The river brought the {3-Spades} and another check from the small blind. This time Coren bet 1,200, and her opponent took some time to consider. Coren continued talking to him, including delivering premature congratulations for folding. Finally he called, and Coren flipped over {7-Spades}{6-Spades} for the flush.

With a sheepish look her opponent mucked. "Can't you tell her good pose from her bad pose?" asked another player of him from across the table. "I've never been good at that," came the grinning reply.

The author of For Richer, For Poorer sits with about 16,000 at present.

Selbst Applying Pressure

Livello 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

On a flop of {4-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{2-Spades} Vanessa Selbst checked to her opponent who fired out a bet of 900. Selbst called and the two saw a turn of {7-Spades}. Both players checked the turn and the river came {A-Hearts}.

Selbst checked once again and her opponent quickly shot out a bet of 1,800. Selbst went into the tank for a while before finally announcing that she was all in. Her opponent let out an annoyed sigh and tossed his hand into the muck. Selbst scooped the pot, bringing to her about 15,000 in chips.

I Need a Doctor

When we reached the table, the flop had fallen {4-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, and David "Doc" Sands was heads up with an opponent in the blinds. Sands' opponent checked-raised him to 750 after David tossed out 275, and Sands called.

The turn was the {5-Clubs}, and Sands called 1,250 from his opponent. Sands' opponent led again after the {k-Diamonds} came on the river - this time for 2,250 - and Sands tank-called. His opponent opened up {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for eight-high , and Sands rolled over {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} for a wired pair of eights.

They were good, and Sands now has close to double the starting stack.

Can't Call You Dude, Says Jude

Livello 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

Jude Ainsworth improved upon his starting stack during the first hour-plus of play, pushing up toward 25,000. He was just now putting some of those newfound chips at risk.

Ainsworth and his opponent had already built a pot of about 2,500 by the turn at which point the board showed {9-Spades}{J-Hearts}{K-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Ainsworth pushed out a bet of 1,750, and his opponent quickly raised to 4,250. With great deliberation, Ainsworth made the call.

The river brought the {7-Diamonds}, and when Ainsworth checked his opponent immediately declared he was all in. A count was requested, and it was determined the bet was for just under 13,000 chips. Ainsworth studied for a while, then finally let his hand go, preserving the 18,000 or so he had behind.

"Queen," said Ainsworth's opponent as he gathered the chips. "Queen?" asked the Irishman. "Yeah," came the reply.

After a moment, Ainsworth asked "Ace-queen?" When his opponent appeared to shake his head, Ainsworth quickly revised his question. "You weren't afraid of ace-queen?" he asked.

"You would have called," came the reply. Ainsworth laughed and nodded, unable to disagree.
