Lucky 13 Set For Final Day of $1,000 Pot Limit Omaha (8-Handed)

2023 WSOP Gold Bracelet
2023 WSOP Gold Bracelet

Stephen Nahm brings a commading chip lead into Day 3 of Event #21: $1,000 Pot Limit Omaha 8-Handed at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. The Canadian holds almost a quarter of the chips in play as the final 13 players chase the WSOP gold bracelet and the top prize of $267,991.

The closest competitor is no stranger to playing under the lights of the feature tables, as Ronald Keijzer looks to claim his second career bracelet. The international flavor at the top of the leaderboard continues with Thomas Taylor and WSOP bracelet winner Dan Matsuzuki holding the next two spots, while Gheorghe Butuc rounds out the top five.

The very first hand of Day 3 Dan Matsuzuki raised in late position and was jammed on by Nicolas Gola who was one of the shortest stacks entering Day 3.

Dan Matsuzuki: AA94

The flop came our paired 6x6x2x and Gola was drawing dead when a king hit the turn.

Dan Matsuzuki raised on the button to 275,000 and was jammed on by the small blind, Thomas Zanot, for 800,000. Matsuzuk quickly made the call and cards were on their backs.

Thomas Zanot: AQ99
Dan Matsuzuki: AA94

The flop fanned out 564 and when the 3 fell on the turn, so did Zanot's hopes in making the final table. He remained good natured and was heard multiple times throughout the tournament saying how fun PLO tournaments are here at the WSOP.

Matsuzuki was dealt aces three out of the first four hands he played and eliminated two players with them. To say he's off to a hot start would be an understatement.

Paul Clotar: A7K6
Ronald Keijzer: QJ82

The flop spread 610Q, pulling Keijzer into the lead with a pair of queens. The turn was the inconsequential 2 and when the 3 fell on the river, the familiar shout for payouts followed.

Mike Gorodinsky moved his short stack all in and was at risk against chip leader Stephen Nahm.

Nahm immediately jumped out in front after the A310 flop, while the J turn and 5 river were no help for Gorodinsky. His tournament run came to an end in tenth place, as the players combined to the final table of nine.

Matsuzuki Takes From Taylor

Livello 28 : 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Dan Matsuzuki
Dan Matsuzuki

Thomas Taylor opened to 200,000 and found a call from Dan Matsuzuki in the big blind.

Matsuzuki led out on the 749 flop with Taylor calling to see the 2 turn. Matsuzuki fired again for 650,000, with Taylor calling to the 7 river.

Matsuzuki fired a third time for 1,300,000 and Taylor took some time before sliding in the call. Matsuzuki revealed Q1075 for trip sevens, taking down a big pot as Taylor mucked his hand.

Thomas Taylor Eliminated in 9th Place ($24,891)

Livello 29 : Blinds 60,000/120,000, 120,000 ante

Gheorghe Butuc raised from under the gun and when it folded around to the short stacked Thomas Taylor, he went all in for his remaining 800,000 in chips. It folded back around to Butuc and he called.

Thomas Taylor: KQ1010
Gheorghe Butuc: AA85

The flop dashed Taylor's hopes as it came 5A6, his only chance was running Broadway cards and they couldn't be a diamond. Stephen Nahm chimed in, "Not even a sweat! Doink!" as he'd already had a couple beers.

The turn was the 2 and the river bricked the 7, awarding the pot to Butuc.

There were plenty of times the last few days where it felt like a rowdy party, but Taylor was always all business; focused and determined.

Jonathan England Eliminated in 8th Place ($31,772)

Livello 30 : Blinds 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante
Jonathan England
Jonathan England

Zachary Peay opened to 320,000 from early position before Dan Matsuzuki raised the pot to around 1,200,000. Jonathan England shipped in his short stack of 620,000 from the big blind and Peay called, leaving the hand three-way to the flop.

Peay checked the 485 flop and called once Matsuzuki continued for 850,000. Another check followed the 3 turn, but this time Peay got out of the way when Matsuzuki announced a pot-size bet. England was then heads-up for his tournament life.

Jonathan England: AK75
Dan Matsuzuki: AA102

Matsuzuki was ahead the whole way and improved to a wheel on the turn. The K river changed nothing, as England wished his opponents good luck on his way to the payout table in eighth place.

Same Same But Different

Livello 30 : Blinds 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante
Kevin Rand
Kevin Rand

With a limp under the gun in front of him, Kevin Rand potted it to 880,000 and it folded to Stephen Nahm, in the blind, who repotted it. When it folded back to Rand he thought a bit and counted how many chips he had left behind. Begrudgingly, he put his chips in the middle and said, "Okay..." When Nahm rolled his hand, Rand was amused saying, "Hey, we have the same hand."

Kevin Rand: AQ74
Stephen Nahm: AQ53

The board came out in favor of Nahm when the dealer spread 1095, pairing one of his danglers. Rand didn't feel much better on the turn, maybe not realizing on the 4 that he had gained at least a couple more outs. When the 4 peeled on the river, it took the dealer's announcement for him to realized he rivered three of a kind.

At this point Dan Matsuzuki chimed in, "Trippin'!" to which Nahm laughed and said, "Trippin' balls!". The ladder is now on his fourth beer and remains jovial. Nahm was seen sprinting back to the table at color up because his tablemates informed him he was in the blind. Beers gotta go somewhere.

Gheorghe Butuc

Gheorghe Butuc got his remaining 1,350,000 into the middle against Kevin Rand, who covered. When their hands were turned up Stephen Nahm couldn't help but chime in, "It's like a hold'em hand!".

Gheorghe Butuc: AK108
Kevin Rand: QQ1010

Nahm's statement felt accurate when the A33 fanned out and Rand was already calling for a club when the Q peeled, giving Rand a boat, locking up the hand as the 8 fell on the river.

Butuc, obviously deflated, left without saying a word to his tablemates.
