WSOP Mixed Game Events Kick Off With $1,500 Dealer's Choice

Brad Ruben
Brad Ruben

What some players have affectionately dubbed “The world’s biggest kitchen table game” kicks off Wednesday on the second day of the 54th World Series of Poker at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, with Day 1 of Event #5: $1,500 Dealer’s Choice Six-Handed.

Entrants will play a variety of 20 flop, stud, and draw games, selected by a player at the table with a secondary button in front of them. That player selects which game will be played for the following orbit, with the game selection button rotating around the table throughout play.

A complete list of eligible games is available on the official WSOP structure sheet.

While the $10,000 Dealers Choice event has become known as the Adam Friedman Invitational for his success in winning that event three years in a row between 2018 and 2021 (before Ben Diebold finally ended that streak last year), its $1,500 cousin may soon be known as the Jaswinder Lally Invitational.

Lally, the 2021 champion nearly took down the 2022 edition as well before falling heads-up to Brad Ruben, who incredibly earned his fourth WSOP bracelet in three years with that victory.

Both players are expected to be in the field along with a who’s who of mixed game wizards and enthusiasts from around the world. Last year, a field of 430 players filled the Paris ballroom with Ruben taking home $126,288 for his victory.

Play begins at 2 p.m. local time in the Paris ballroom for the first of 15 scheduled 40-minute levels. Players will receive a 15-minute break at the conclusion of every third level and registration and a single reentry will be allowed until the start of Level 10 (approximately 8:45 p.m.).

Players will receive 25,000 starting chips to begin and as with all WSOP events this year, chips will be in play immediately for all players who registered before the start of play.

Chad Eveslage raised to 1,200 on the button and was called by the small blind and Phil Hellmuth in the big blind. Eveslage drew two as Hellmuth drew three and the small blind drew one.

Action checked through after the first draw and Eveslage drew two as Hellmuth and the small blind again drew three and one.

The small blind then led out for 1,200 and Hellmuth and Eveslage both called. The small blind stood pat as Eveslage drew one and Hellmuth drew one.

The small blind bet again after the third draw and only Hellmuth called. The small blind showed 87642 for an eight-seven low and a three-card badugi and Hellmuth put down 543 as he read his opponent's hand.

"Oh wait, I scoop it!" Hellmuth cheered as he turned over 87 to reveal a better low and a better three-card badugi.

"I don't slow roll intentionally," Hellmuth consoled his opponent.

Shefer Doubles Through Negreanu

Livello 10

Daniel Negreanu

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Max Kruse opened to 1,100 in early position and got a call from Daniel Negreanu in late position before Ariel Shefer three-bet to 3,000 in the small blind. Both opponents called and the trio went to the drawing rounds.

Shefer took one card, while Kruse and Negreanu each took two. Shefer then led out for 9,000 which got a fold from Kruse, but Negreanu moved all in, covering Shefer's 18,800 total. Shefer called and patted his hand. Negreanu deliberated briefly before opting to break his hand and draw one.

On the second and third draws, Negreanu still needed to draw one while Shefer continued to pat his hand.

Once the final draw was completed, Negreanu revealed 5x4x3x2x, while Shefer showed 7x6x4x3x2x for number two.

Negreanu squeezed for a three-across and got it, unfortunately for him it was a 6x.

"I made a straight, I get the high," joked the Poker Hall of Famer before passing his chips to Shefer.

Nacho Wins Deuce With an Ace

Nacho Barbero

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

It was Nacho Barbero's turn to choose a game and he took his time sifting through the 20 mixed game placards as Daniel Negreanu and others at the table waited for the high-stakes Argentinian pro to make a decision.

After getting to the final placard, Barbero flipped back to the top of the stack and made another run through before landing on Limit 2-7 Triple Draw.

An early position player raised to 3,000 and Barbero and the button called. Barbero drew one and his opponents drew two.

Action checked to Barbero and he bet and drew one. Both opponents called and drew one. Each player again checked and drew one and checked once more after the third draw.

Barbero showed A6432 as he picked up an ace at the end to significantly weaken his hand. But it was enough to win as both of his opponents paired at the end and mucked in defeat.

"I'm a genius. I'm a f***ing genius," Barbero said as he took in the pot.

"I could stand pat. I don't know if I should," Stamm replied before drawing one.
