Hot on the heels of the Poker Players Championship, this event is the next marquee event for mixed game players and a star-studded field filled the Paris ballroom to illustrate that, with more on their way Saturday before registration closes.

The champion of the PPC, Brian Rast was among the many big names who were unable to find a bag though, which also included last year’s runner-up in this event, Craig Chait, Hall of Famers Eli Elezra, Erik Seidel, and Jen Harman, and multi-time WSOP bracelet winners Adam Friedman, Chad Eveslage, and Anthony Zinno.

Among others that will be returning for Day 2 Saturday include defending champion Andrew Yeh, who bagged a bit more than a starting stack with 68,000 chips. Hall of Famer Daniel Negreanu will bring 168,000 back, while other mixed game stars such as Mike Gorodinsky (180,000), Esther Taylor (163,000), Josh Arieh (159,500), and Brandon Shack-Harris (148,000) will also find healthy stacks at their table to start the day.

Play will resume at 1 p.m. Las Vegas time in the Horseshoe Event Center for the second of four days of play. As mentioned, registration will remain open until the start of play, which will begin with Level 11. Levels will now stretch to 90 minutes in length with seven of them on the schedule for Saturday.

Prize pool and payout information will be available once registration is complete.

Paul Zappulla was all in on third street and his potential executioners Craig Chait and Tony Gregg began building a side pot.

Last year's runner-up in this event, Chait bet fourth and fifth streets with Gregg deciding not to continue on the big bet streets.

Chait had already made a seven-six which held up against Zappulla's wheel draw that could only improve to an eight, sending him to the rail.

Mascio continued betting on sixth, again receiving a pair of calls. On seventh however, everyone checked, but Mascio's two pair of eights and sevens was the best hand to scoop the pot with neither player holding a low.

What will surely be a long, difficult road to mixed-game supremacy begins today when Event #54: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship gets underway at 2 p.m. local time at the 2023 World Series of Poker.

This event attracts one of the most elite, star-studded fields on the WSOP calendar. Andrew Yeh prevailed over 209 players last year to win $487,129 and his first WSOP bracelet, defeating Craig Chait in a heads-up match that lasted well into the fourth day of play. Bracelet winners Philip Long, Bryce Yockey, and John Racener also made runs to the final table, while Ben Lamb, Jerry Wong, Shaun Deeb, and newly-crowned $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. winner Yuri Dzivielevski finished in the money, but came up short of making it to the final table.

This tournament requires a mastery of five different poker variants—Limit Hold’em; Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better; Razz; Seven Card Stud; and Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better. The field might be small, but it surely won’t lack star power. Past champions of this event include Poker Hall of Famer John Hennigan, $50,000 PPC winner David Bach, and Jason Mercier. Four days from now, one lucky player will get to add their name to this illustrious list.

Players begin the tournament with a 60,000 starting stack. Day 1 consists of ten levels, the first six are 40 minutes long and levels seven through ten are 60 minutes long. All levels from Day 2 on will be extended to 90 minutes. There is a 15-minute break every two hours. Late registration is open until the beginning of Day 2, so anyone who doesn’t jump in today can still do so on Saturday before cards go in the air. The final table on Monday will be streamed on a delay on PokerGO.

Poker's biggest stars will gather today inside the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas at 2 p.m. and PokerNews will be right there alongside them providing live updates from this prestigious event.
