Day 1 of Event #28: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Freezeout, has concluded at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. A total of 2,046 players entered the event, generating a prize pool of $2,731,410, easily outstripping last year’s figures of 1,774 runners and $2,368,290 in the kitty. This year’s winner can look forward to a $406,403 purse and, of course, a WSOP gold bracelet to go with it.

At the close of play, Hao Zhou sat atop the leaderboard with an impressive 970,000 chip stack. Zhou’s previous best cash was for $1,095, and he has already locked up almost three times that amount. However, he will be looking to improve on that greatly tomorrow.

Zhou took the chip lead late in the day with a massive pot, but didn’t rest on his laurels, steadily adding chips to his stack in the final few levels. Zhou has several players hot on his heels, who will be eyeing the top spot come Day 2.

Taylor Paur currently lies in second place with 876,000 chips, while Turbo Nguyen (850,000), Tzur Levy (818,000), and Mario Navarro (810,000) round out the top five.

Meanwhile, seasoned pros Ryan Leng and Mustapha Kanit are very much in the hunt with 562,000 and 437,000, respectively. Two other notables returning on Day 2 are Chino Rheem (521,000) and Leo Soma (179,000).

The bubble burst with 307 players remaining, all of whom locked up a $2,406 payday. Some 188 players will return on Tuesday, June 13, with the intention of turning that into a much bigger figure.

Notable players who fell by the wayside today included Matt Affleck, Kathy Leibert, Maria Ho and Barry Greenstein.

Cards will be in the air at 10:00 a.m. on June 13 and those fortunate enough to be returning for Day 2 will start the day at Level 18, meaning blinds of 5,000/10,000 and a 10,000 big blind ante.

The day will consist of ten 60-minute levels, with a 15-minute break every two levels. There will also be an extended break for dinner after Level 23 (≈ 4:30 p.m.) which will last 60 minutes.

Stayed tuned to PokerNews for full coverage of this and all other events throughout the 2023 World Series of Poker at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

Rheem With The Five Trey; Schwartz Multi-Tables

Livello 16 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Chino Rheem
Chino Rheem

On a board reading 57393, a dejected opponent was standing up with the JJ placed in front of him. The pot was being pushed to Chino Rheem who had 35 sitting in front of him, shrugging the situation off saying, "I flopped two pair..."

Rheem has plenty of final tables under his belt and titles at plenty of other series but the gold has eluded him at the WSOP. He'll be one to watch in the counts tomorrow.

In other news, Jake Schwartz has been seen sprinting back and forth between this event and the $1,500 2-7 Triple Draw.

Kade KO'd

Livello 13 : Blinds 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante

After having her aces cracked a few hands previously, Vanessa Kade was extremely short stacked.

Facing an early position raise from Morten Mortensen, a mid position call, and a shove from the small blind, Kade was at least getting some value for her inevitable all-in from the big blind.

Mortensen then reshoved and got a fold from the mid position caller, leaving Kade and the small blind at risk.

Morten Mortensen: 88

The board fell 69K29 and Mortensen claimed two scalps.

No Dice For Greenstein

Livello 13 : Blinds 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

The charitable Barry Greenstein, who many know from old episodes of High Stakes Poker and Poker After Dark, was all in and at risk against the bigger stack of Aaron Johnson.

Barry Greenstein: 99
Aaron Johnson: AK

It was up to the dealer to spin the wheel and they put out a board of JAA85, pulling Johnson into the lead. The turn was the 8 which at least gave Greenstein a straight draw, but the 5 was a brick and Johnson chipped up heftily.

Joe Cada went all in for his remaining 33,000 from middle position and was isolated by the all in of David Yonnotti, the rest of the table folded.

Joe Cada: AK

The flop came out clean for Cada as it rolled, 10A4. The former Main Event winner remained stoic as the J rolled off and his only reaction when the 9 peeled was to collect his belongings and go on his way.

Chang Survives Clash with Brenes

Livello 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante

Humberto Brenes raised from early position and it folded round to Yu-Chung "Nevan" Chang, who went all in from the small blind. Brenes obliged with a call, putting Chang at risk.

Nevan Chang: JJ
Humberto Brenes: 99

With both suits covered Chang just needed to fade a nine — but he went one better and flopped a Jack with the board running out 4J853, giving Chang a welcome double-up.

The button called and the under-the-gun player folded.
